What Does the Luna UCR™ Avocado Taste Like?

The Luna UCR™ avocado is often compared to Hass, and for good reason. It has the familiar creamy avocado character that most people expect from a Hass, but when you actually taste Luna, there are some noticeable differences.

A Hass-Like Flavor, But Not Quite Hass

Luna has a mild, pleasant nuttiness, but it doesn't have the same deep, rich, nutty flavor that makes a good Hass so distinctive.

If you're expecting Luna to taste exactly like Hass, you may notice the difference immediately.

To me, Luna has a smoother and more subtle flavor profile. The nuttiness is there, but it's less pronounced. Instead, there can be a delicate floral character, along with a slight sweetness depending on the fruit and its stage of ripeness.

It still clearly tastes like an avocado, but the overall eating experience is a little lighter and more nuanced than a rich Hass.

The Texture

Texture is another area where Luna stands out.

The flesh is creamy, but I would describe it as smooth rather than heavy or extremely rich. It doesn't have that dense, almost buttery sensation that you can sometimes get from a Hass.

That smooth texture works especially well when eating the fruit fresh.

What About the Seed and Flesh?

Luna also has a relatively small seed, which means there is a good amount of edible flesh surrounding it.

When you cut one open, the thick peel is noticeable, but it can peel away surprisingly easily from the flesh. The fruit has a smooth exterior and a slightly elongated shape, giving it a distinctive appearance compared with the more heavily textured skin of Hass.

How I Would Describe Luna

If I had to put the Luna flavor into a few words, I'd describe it as:

Smooth. Mildly nutty. Slightly floral. Occasionally sweet. Creamy, but not heavy.

It's not trying to completely replace the flavor of Hass. Instead, Luna offers a slightly different interpretation of the familiar avocado experience.

And that's what makes tasting different avocado varieties so interesting. Two varieties can both be creamy and delicious while having completely different flavor characteristics.

For me, Hass still has the edge when it comes to that rich, deep nuttiness, but Luna has its own appeal with its smoother texture and more subtle flavor.

The best way to describe it?

It tastes like an avocado that wants to be a Hass—but with its own personality.
