Why Store-Bought Avocados Will Never Beat Homegrown

If you've ever tasted a homegrown avocado, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Once you grow your own, it's hard to go back to buying avocados from the grocery store.

One of the biggest differences is when the fruit is harvested. Commercial avocado growers have to pick thousands of pounds of fruit that will be shipped all over the country. That means avocados are harvested as soon as they've reached the minimum maturity for shipping, not when they've had the maximum amount of time to develop flavor on the tree.

After harvest, those avocados may spend days or even weeks being packed, transported, stored in warehouses, and delivered to grocery stores. By the time you finally buy one, it has already been through a long journey.

To make sure the fruit ripens on store shelves, many packing facilities expose avocados to ethylene gas. Ethylene is a natural plant hormone that tells the fruit it's time to ripen. This helps stores sell ripe avocados on demand, but it isn't the same as allowing the fruit to stay on the tree until you're ready to harvest it.

One of the best things about growing your own avocado tree is that you're in control. Most avocado varieties don't begin ripening until you pick them, so you can leave the fruit hanging on the tree until you're ready to eat it. While it's on the tree, it continues to develop and is protected by the tree itself instead of sitting in a box or warehouse.

When you harvest an avocado from your own backyard, it hasn't spent weeks on a truck or in cold storage. It comes straight from the tree to your kitchen, and that's one of the biggest reasons homegrown avocados often have a richer flavor, creamier texture, and a fresher taste than what you'll find at the grocery store.

Don't get me wrong—store-bought avocados are convenient, and they're what most people have access to. But if you have the space to grow even one avocado tree, you'll understand why so many backyard growers say they'll never go back. Once you taste a perfectly tree-ripened avocado from your own yard, you'll realize what you've been missing.
